Tiger in the Night came to life following a request for a nocturnal forest with golden leaves and a sense of the Byzantine. When stripes were added to the leaves they suddenly resembled the stripes of a tiger and brought to mind the fearful symmetry of William Blake’s poem, which in turn suggested the idea of the eyes burning in the night.
